Since September is Sepsis Awareness Month here in the USA and worldwide, I wanted to post my response to an excellent article appearing in the European Society of Lifestyle Medicine regarding the rise of chronic and preventable conditions and diseases globally. My response is below:
This article does an excellent job of underscoring what needs to be done globally while highlighting the critical need to have a public debate rooted in science, empirical evidence, and business logic rather than that which has infiltrated the United States and continues to spread like wildfire. Ideological positions and the vested interests of certain individuals and entities with less than honorable intentions appear to have disregarded the Hippocratic oath "to do no harm." The American people are being misled and deceived as never before. It is now up to the global community to intervene on behalf of people all over the world, particularly those suffering from or who will suffer from infections of every kind currently on the rise. This means sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock have and continue to skyrocket. Septic shock is believed by medical experts of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign to be the number one killer worldwide and it is already the number one killer of children. We cannot "will" disease away. We must try to prevent what we can and be combat-ready for what we cannot by educating the public with honesty, integrity, and compassion. Sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock refer to the reaction your body has to an infection (be it bacterial, fungal, viral or parasitic) and can happen to anyone, anytime. As antibodies deploy to fight the infection, from the most benign to the most severe, for reasons unknown, sometimes the antibodies go into overdrive and cause system-wide inflammation. This can lead to plummeting blood pressure and not enough oxygenated blood and nutrients getting through to organs and limbs. This can then cause multiple organ failures, gangrene, limb amputations and even death. Sepsis mimics many other conditions so both the medical community as well as the general public need to be made aware of what to look for. Sepsis is a medical emergency and must be treated as such. Consult an ethical board-certified physician or call 911 (in the USA) as needed for all your health needs particularly in an emergency. As always, "CLIMB, LIFT & EAT WELL..."
